What happened
GitHub Copilot's agent mode graduated from technical preview to general availability for all Copilot Enterprise and Business subscribers. The feature allows Copilot to autonomously plan and execute multi-step coding tasks within VS Code, including file creation, terminal commands, and iterative debugging. GitHub also announced MCP support in agent mode, allowing Copilot to connect to external tools and data sources.
Why it matters
Copilot agent mode is GitHub's answer to Claude Code, Cursor, and other agentic coding tools. Its GA release validates that agentic coding has moved from experimental to expected — every major IDE vendor now has or is building this capability. However, the implementation is still catching up to dedicated tools like Claude Code on complex multi-file tasks. The MCP support is the more interesting signal: it confirms MCP's position as the interop standard even among competitors. For most developers, this is a welcome improvement to a tool they already use, not a reason to change their workflow.

Teams already on GitHub Copilot Enterprise who haven't tried agent mode yet, engineering leads evaluating agentic coding tools for their organization, and MCP server developers who gain another platform consuming their integrations.
